Hello Gourd-Geous!

Gourds are grown and used as food in India rather than as a decoration. These belong to cucumber, gourd, pumpkin, luffa and melon. These are used in our Indian cooking in dry, gravies, chutney, raita, dal and sambar.

Ridge gourd: 

This is being low in calories can be include in the regular usage. It has a significant amount of Vitamin A, B-6 & C acts as an immunity booster (protects from free radicles), an anti-aging factor as well. Besides, it is a good source of fibre that makes it easy for digestion and relieves constipation. The minerals like magnesium present in ridge gourd are good for the health of bones, heart, immunity; iron for combating anaemia may cause fatigue, is also important for healthy hair, skin and nails.

Bottle-gourd: 

The well-known bottle-gourd juice is used to treat cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory disorders, diabetes millets, stomach related issues. The fresh juice cleanses our digestive system and flushes out the toxins. It is a rich source of Vitamin C, magnesium and is a good source of iron & fibre. The concoction helps maintain electrolyte balance during summer.  

Snake gourd: 

Being a good source of Vitamin A, B, C & E, calcium, manganese, magnesium and iron. Regular consumption improves hair, skin growth and possesses anti-inflammatory properties that could reduce diabetes, cancer, heart-related disorders, stroke, sleep disorders, mood disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis. The ground mixture can be applied to hair to get rid of dandruff and to promote hair growth.

Bitter gourd: 

It is loaded with polyphenols (compounds that reduce inflammation in the body). It also contains bioactive compounds as saponins and terpenoids help reducing glucose levels in the blood. It is abundantly packed with Vitamin A, B (B1, B2, B3, B9), C, fibre, magnesium, zinc, etc.

Ash gourd:

This is very low in calories and high in water content (96%) when compared with other gourds except for cucumber; which cools down the body, thereby balancing the internal tissues of the liver and kidney. It is high in potassium & vitamin C that regulates blood pressure and uplifts immunity respectively. Ash gourd has a fair source of iodine and zinc that are linked to the proper functioning of the thyroid hormone.

Ivy gourd: 

It is known for the phytonutrient property which has saponins, flavonoids, and terpenoids that exhibits anti-cancer and controls diabetes levels and keeps our heart safe. Regular consumption would correct metabolic disorders. An increased fibre intake would reduce gastrointestinal disorders as well.

Cucumber:

As we all know no salad is complete without cucumber. This vegetable has a refreshing taste and 95% of the water that relieves dehydration. The presence of vitamin K is responsible for blood clotting, wound healing and keep bones healthy. The fibre content in cucumbers helps relieve diabetes and cardiac diseases. Being anti-inflammatory, cucumber combat depression, cancer and auto-immune conditions.
